Tuff Gloves

Description

The Tuff Glove Hot Surface Protector claims to allow you to handle hot items safely and easily. Withstanding heat up to 500 degrees, it promises to keep your hands safe from burns when grilling, baking, barbecuing, microwaving, and cooking on a stove-top. I tried the gloves with glass dishes, metal dishes, and cast iron. I turned the heat up to 500 degrees and also used the broiler for my testing. It was freezing outside so I didn’t try them with any grill cooking.

For me, the glove absolutely worked. I actually touched the racks in the oven, which I don’t recommend, to see how long it would take before I could feel the heat in an uncomfortable way and it was definitely longer than I expected. Much longer than I would be spending handling any hot dish or pan.

So if it works, why didn’t I like this? Well, for one thing, when you take the gloves out of the box, they are really stinky. Kind of like how a damp, straw beach mat smells. (I did make my husband sniff them and he said he thought they had a bit of a chemical aroma.) After they aired out for a day and then were washed, they still had a bit of that smell but if you’re not sticking your hands right up under your nose, you may not notice it. Or it may not even smell bad to you.

The Tuff Glove can be worn on either hand and claims to have a “comfortable five-finger flexible grip.” And the box says “One size fits most.” Well, I know I’m a petite person but my hands aren’t that much smaller than a lot of my friends. I mean, look at these things…They are huge!
